ABOUT LAKE VIEW CEMETERY: Founded in 1869, Lake View Cemetery is one of the largest and most beautiful garden cemeteries in the United States. Modeled after the Victorian garden cemeteries of France and England, Lake View is filled with dramatic natural landscapes, artful plantings, and carefully curated monuments. It was designed as a retreat for the living – open to all walks of life - to reconnect with the beauty and healing qualities of nature. Luminaries of Cleveland’s past, such as President James A. Garfield; John L. Severance; Frances Payne Bolton, and Carl B. Stokes join more than 113,000 others laid to rest here. Lake View is also home for two buildings listed on the National Register for Historic Places: The James A. Garfield Memorial and the Wade Memorial Chapel.

THE PROJECT: Over 9,000 veterans are buried throughout Lake View’s 285 acres. Each year, in the days leading up to Memorial Day, groups of volunteers join in the effort to honor these fallen heroes by placing a flag at their graves. The dates available are Thursday, May 22, Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24.
