Volunteer: RideConnect Volunteer Driver Program

Since its inception in July 2021, The Catholic Social Services’ RideConnect program has made significant strides in bridging the transportation gap for our communities. As the program celebrates its third anniversary, it is reaching out to the community for new volunteer drivers to help expand its services and continue to make a difference in the lives of residents.

RideConnect, a grassroots initiative dedicated to providing reliable and accessible transportation has been instrumental in connecting individuals to essential services such as medical appointments, grocery shopping, and community events. The program has proven to be a lifeline for many, particularly for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those without access to personal vehicles.  However, the program is dependent on volunteers and their availability to provide these services to individuals in need.

Volunteers Drive their own vehicle - we provide mileage reimbursement for approved RideConnect trips

Trips are flexible - Volunteers accept requests based on their availability

Why Volunteer with RideConnect?

Make a Tangible Impact: Volunteer drivers play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for area residents. By offering a helping hand, volunteers directly contribute to the well-being and independence of community members who might otherwise struggle with transportation. Flexible Commitment: RideConnect understands that volunteers have varied schedules and commitments. The program offers flexible driving opportunities that can be tailored to fit around your availability. Whether you can spare a few hours a week or a few days a month, your contributions are valued. Build Community Connections: Volunteering with RideConnect provides a unique opportunity to forge meaningful connections with individuals across your community. It's a chance to meet new people, learn about their stories, and become an integral part of a supportive network. Personal Fulfillment: Many volunteers find that giving back to their community brings a deep sense of personal satisfaction. Knowing that your efforts help someone get to a crucial appointment or attend an important event is a rewarding experience that enriches both the giver and the receiver. Receive Support and Training: RideConnect is committed to providing its volunteers with all necessary support and training. New drivers will receive screenings and orientation to ensure they feel confident and well-prepared. The program also offers ongoing assistance and resources to make the volunteering experience as smooth as possible.

Many hospice patients have strong connections to music, whether it reminds them of a particular time in their life or simply brings them peace. Our patients are nearing the end of their lives and music can be a powerful means of connecting them to past memories or providing comfort.

What does a hospice volunteer musician do?

Volunteer musicians meet with patients in a facility or private home and sing, play their instrument or just play recorded music for a period of time. Volunteers are encouraged to interact with the patient, discuss music, or even play music from their phone. Visits are scheduled at times that are convenient for you.

What if I don’t have any experience?

Luminary Hospice provides exceptional training for its volunteers. Hospice volunteers receive the same orientation as paid staff in addition to their volunteer-specific training. Our training covers hospice history and basics, as well as special considerations surrounding grief, ethics, and bereavement. You only need to bring an open heart and a willingness to serve others, and we will train you.

Why volunteer with us?

Luminary is doing hospice differently. Our interdisciplinary team is comprised of professionals who are genuinely passionate about hospice care. We depend on our volunteers to complement the exceptional service that we offer our patients. Volunteers help us provide end of life care that far exceeds hospice standards and our patients’ and family’s expectations.

Join our team of amazing volunteers!

Musician volunteers provide their availability to the Luminary Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, schedule time(s) convenient for them, and spend as much time as they choose with a patient.

Volunteer orientations are offered each month. Call or email for more information or to register for an upcoming orientation.

Volunteer: Adult Literacy Tutor-Be the Positive Change in Cleveland (Virtual Tutoring)

Got a soft spot for sentence composition? Love long division or adore algebra? How about sharing your everyday reading, writing, and math skills with a dedicated adult learner in your community?

Seeds of Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization that provides free GED prep and basic education to adults in the Cleveland area, has an urgent need for people just like you to volunteer as adult literacy tutors. The shocking truth is that an estimated 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and may struggle with everyday necessities like reading a bus schedule and understanding medication labels.

This is where you can make a very real difference! Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning.

Generally we ask that tutors come to one class session per week (that's 1% of your week!) for one year. We can, however, make accommodations for those with special circumstances.

Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference and availability. Tutoring sessions take place in our Virtual Classroom on Zoom.

You don’t have to be an educator to help - we’ll train you. To start the process, please complete the Volunteer Application: https://www.seedsofliteracy.org/tutor

Volunteer: Saturday Adventures - Help City Teens Get Outside!

What We Do

Through Adventure Crew, city teens develop the courageous spirit to step out of their comfort zone and discover new worlds - outside in nature, and inside themselves. This deep connection to nature will change the course of their lives, no matter what environment they’re in.

Who We Are

Adventure Crew connects city teens to nature and each other through engaging outdoor adventures. We believe adventure is riding a bike for the first time, feeling mud shift under your boots, or falling over your skis. The outdoors is one of the greatest learning environments of all.

Our vision is to see every city teen inspired by nature - and we need your help to do this!

What You Can Do?

We're looking for dedicated, positive, team-oriented volunteers to assist with Saturday programs at outdoor recreation sites across the region. Opportunities include kayaking, camp days, ice skating, snowboarding & skiing, camp days, field days, and hiking.

We ask for a time commitment of at least one adventure every other month, with typical duration being 4-6 hours. The volunteer process includes indicating interest in volunteering, completing or providing a recent background check, and briefly filling out a volunteer survey, then you're good to go.

To sign up and jump right in, fill out our volunteer interest form here: https://www.adventurecrew.org/volunteer

If you'd like to know more before taking the leap, check out our website  and hear stories from our staff, volunteers, and Crew teens to learn more here: https://www.adventurecrew.org/

We're excited you're joining this Crew of Adventurers!

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by domestic violence? Are you looking for a meaningful way to support Turning Point in their mission to provide safety, support, and resources to survivors? Hosting a collection drive or fundraiser on behalf of Turning Point is a powerful way to contribute to our cause while raising awareness about domestic violence and the critical services we provide.

Key Benefits of Hosting a Collection Drive or Fundraiser for Turning Point:

Supporting Survivors Through Donations: Donations are a vital component of our efforts to provide necessities for individuals and families staying in our shelter. By hosting a collection drive or fundraiser, you directly contribute to ensuring that survivors have access to essential items such as clothing, toiletries, bedding, and household supplies during their time of need.

Raising Awareness About Domestic Violence: Hosting a collection drive or fundraiser provides a platform to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence in our communities and the importance of the work Turning Point does. By educating others about the signs of domestic violence, available resources, and ways to support survivors, you help break the silence surrounding this issue and empower individuals to take action.

Building Community Engagement: A collection drive or fundraiser is an opportunity to engage your community in a meaningful cause. Whether you're mobilizing friends, family, coworkers, or community groups, coming together to support survivors sends a powerful message of solidarity and compassion.

Providing Agency Materials for Support: To assist you in your efforts, Turning Point will provide agency materials, including informational brochures, posters, and other resources, to help raise awareness.

How You Can Get Involved:

Host a Donation Collection Drive: Collect items such as clothing, toiletries, bedding, and household supplies to benefit individuals and families staying at Turning Point's shelter. Organize a Fundraiser: Host a fundraising event such as a bake sale, car wash, or community dinner to raise funds in support of Turning Point's programs and services. Spread the Word: Use social media, email newsletters, and word-of-mouth to promote your collection drive or fundraiser and raise awareness about domestic violence.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of survivors and help create a community where everyone can live free from abuse. Thank you for considering hosting a collection drive or fundraiser for Turning Point. Your support truly makes a difference.

Volunteer: Meals to Heal

At Turning Point, we understand that healing from domestic violence requires more than just physical safety—it requires nourishment for both the body and the soul. That's why we're proud to continue our Meals to Heal program, designed to provide nutritious and comforting meals for individuals and families staying at our shelter as they work towards independence and healing.

Key Features of the Meals to Heal Program:

Nutritious Meals for Residents: Our dedicated Shelter Coordinator works hard to provide nutritious food for the individuals and families staying in our shelter, with a weekly grocery pickup with a modest budget. With careful attention to dietary needs and preferences, we ensure that every resident receives nutritious food that not only satisfies their hunger but also provides essential nutrients to support their well-being.

Community Support Through Gift Cards: Recognizing the importance of community support in our mission, we gratefully accept donations of gift cards from local restaurants. These gift cards enable us to supplement our grocery budget with offerings from beloved local eateries, including pizza, pasta, subs, and other comforting favorites. This collaborative effort not only provides variety and convenience for our residents but also strengthens ties with our local community.

Empowering Residents on Their Journey: For individuals and families staying at Turning Point, the journey towards healing and independence can be challenging, especially for those who are balancing work responsibilities alongside their healing process. By providing nourishing meals through the Meals to Heal program, we aim to alleviate some of the burdens associated with daily meal preparation, allowing residents to focus on their personal growth and healing journey.

Promoting Independence and Self-Sufficiency: As residents progress in their healing journey, our goal is to equip them with the skills and resources they need to live independently and sustainably beyond their time at Turning Point. Through the Meals to Heal program, residents learn the importance of nutrition, meal planning, and budgeting, empowering them to make healthier choices and build a foundation for a life free from abuse.

Fostering a Sense of Community and Belonging: Sharing meals together fosters a sense of community and belonging among residents, creating opportunities for connection, support, and mutual encouragement. Whether enjoying a home-cooked meal prepared by volunteers or savoring a treat from a local restaurant, residents find comfort and strength in the communal experience of breaking bread together.

The Meals to Heal program embodies our commitment to holistic support for survivors of domestic violence, recognizing that nourishing the body and soul is essential on the journey to healing and independence. Through the generosity of our volunteers, donors, and community partners, we continue to provide nourishment, comfort, and hope to those in need. Join us in our mission to create a community where everyone can live a life free from abuse.

If you are interested in participating in our Meals to Heal Program, please contact Jaini Shah, Volunteer Coordinator at jshah@turningpoint6.org

Volunteer: Help Stop Elder Abuse in Stark County!

The Court Angels program works with the Probate Court to help prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation experienced by seniors and disabled adults under guardianship (wards) in Stark County. We do this by conducting annual in-person visits with the wards, where we aim to provide companionship and ensure that the wards are receiving appropriate care from their guardians. Fortunately, 95% of wards are well looked after. However, there are a few cases where their situations are less than satisfactory. In those cases, we report back to the court where the Judge will intervene and implement changes. Without these visits, the court might not become aware of these issues until it is too late.
