Volunteer: Eastern Middle School MLK Day of Service with Serve Ohio

This project will provide food and hygiene items to low-income and unhoused members of our community. Our food pantries have been struggling to keep up with the increase in demand and often hygiene items are not readily available. We have a growing number of student families that do not have feminine products, tooth brushes, toothpaste, deodorant etc. and the school is attempting to fill that need but our supplies are exhausted. By providing both food and hygienic items we are meeting the most essential needs while helping to restore dignity to those in our community who are struggling. In addition to the food and hygiene items provided we will provide information on other resources in the community so that they will have additional support readily available.

The volunteers will serve multiple roles for this project including: budgeting and shopping for food and hygiene items, identifying and contacting individuals within the community that are in need, packing items into food bags, putting together hygiene kits, creating a resource handout with additional information for families to use, making encouragement cards to accompany the supplies, and delivering the items to families and/or individuals within the community in need.

This project is funded by Serve Ohio in collaboration with the Eastern Local School District.

Volunteer: MLK Day Period Poverty Service Project

The Worthington Resource Pantry will purchase $1,000 worth of bulk feminine hygiene pads to create Dignity Packs for distribution to neighbors in need. Volunteers will work together to sort, count, and repackage the pads into smaller, ready-to-distribute bundles that can be easily accessed through the Pantry’s Choice Shopping Area and Homebound Delivery program.

This hands-on service project will give volunteers, particularly youth and community groups, the opportunity to directly support women and girls facing period poverty. In addition to assembling the packs, volunteers will assist with labeling, organizing, and stocking the Pantry shelves to ensure the products are accessible to all who need them. The project will benefit women, girls, and aging women across northern Franklin and southern Delaware County who face financial barriers to accessing menstrual hygiene products.

These Dignity Packs will serve hundreds of local households who turn to the Worthington Resource Pantry each month for essential items. In addition, volunteers will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing their community and the importance of equitable access to personal care essentials.

Volunteer: Propagation Operation

Welcome to the Propagation Operation, or PropOps for short. Our goal is to propagate native plants to be used for restoration and conservation projects throughout the district. In addition to trees and shrubs, volunteers will be growing herbaceous plants as well at the Barbara Cox Center for Sustainable Horticulture at Cox Arboretum MetroPark.

Impact

Protecting open space and natural areas is a priority for Five Rivers MetroParks, which protects nearly 16,000 acres of land — 90 percent of it in its natural state. Conservation volunteers are a part of our regional conservation story by assisting in implementing a variety of natural area management plans.

Tasks

Under the supervision of the assigned staff, volunteers will support and assist with the following:

Transplanting propagated trees and small herbaceous plugs to be later planted throughout the parks. Maintain tree and herbaceous seedlings by watering, fertilizing, weeding, etc. Eligibility This opportunity is open to the following volunteers: Teens and adults (ages 14 and older), Long-Term, and Short-Term. Learn more about our types of service here. Youth Volunteers: Youth volunteers ages 14-17 are not required to complete a background check. If you are a new youth volunteer, contact volunteer.services@metroparks.org to have your background check waived.  Additional Notes Parking & Meeting Instructions: Click here for a map of Cox Arboretum. Volunteers should park in the main lot in front of the visitor center at 6733 N Springboro Pike, Dayton, Ohio (Cox Arboretum MetroPark). Follow the paved path to the left of the Visitor Center, leading you around and behind the visitor center, where a staff person will be waiting for you inside or near the greenhouse.  Cancelation: If you need to cancel a shift last minute or are running late, please call Volunteer Services at 937-275-7275. Environment & Physical Demands: This project takes place primarily indoors, inside the greenhouse. However, if the weather is nice or if the project demands, staff may open greenhouse bay doors and ask volunteers to support both indoor and outdoor tasks. Please be aware of outdoor exposure risks (i.e., sun, etc.), and of seasonal allergies (i.e., grass, pollen, bees, etc.). Dress: Volunteers should dress for the weather, dress in layers, wear long pants, and closed-toe shoes (sneakers/tennis shoes), and have their favorite work gloves and a pre-filled water bottle.  Look for additional details about this opportunity at the bottom of this listing! Volunteer: Bedside Vigil Volunteer

Luminary Hospice is seeking volunteers who sing or play an instrument to share their love of music with a hospice patient.

Many hospice patients have strong connections to music, whether it reminds them of a particular time in their life or simply brings them peace. Our patients are nearing the end of their lives and music can be a powerful means of connecting them to past memories or providing comfort.

What does a hospice volunteer musician do?

Volunteer musicians meet with patients in a facility or private home and sing, play their instrument or just play recorded music for a period of time. Volunteers are encouraged to interact with the patient, discuss music, or even play music from their phone. Visits are scheduled at times that are convenient for you.

What if I don’t have any experience?

Luminary Hospice provides exceptional training for its volunteers. Hospice volunteers receive the same orientation as paid staff in addition to their volunteer-specific training. Our training covers hospice history and basics, as well as special considerations surrounding grief, ethics, and bereavement. You only need to bring an open heart and a willingness to serve others, and we will train you.

Why volunteer with us?

Luminary is doing hospice differently. Our interdisciplinary team is comprised of professionals who are genuinely passionate about hospice care. We depend on our volunteers to complement the exceptional service that we offer our patients. Volunteers help us provide end of life care that far exceeds hospice standards and our patients’ and family’s expectations.

Join our team of amazing volunteers!

Musician volunteers provide their availability to the Luminary Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, schedule time(s) convenient for them, and spend as much time as they choose with a patient.

Volunteer orientations are offered each month. Call or email for more information or to register for an upcoming orientation.

Hospice volunteers provide their availability to the Luminary Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, schedule time(s) convenient for them, and spend as much time as they choose with a patient.

Volunteer orientations are offered each month. Call or email for more information or to register for an upcoming orientation.

Volunteer: Cooperative Learning Center

About the Program: The Miami County ESC works closely with Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams from area school districts to provide a specialized learning environment for students (Kindergarten through 12th grade) at the Cooperative Learning Center. Along with academic instruction, students attending this school focus on building positive social skills, emotional regulation/coping skills, and increased communication. Instruction is available for students that require modified curriculum (aligned with Ohio’s extended content standards). Also, students have the opportunity for vocational and functional life skills training. Our staff partners with families and outside agencies to provide comprehensive support to students as they work toward their individual goals.
