Make a real impact on the lives of Ohio students and their surrounding community - become an Ohio College and Career Guide AmeriCorps member and serve as an advisor, mentoring and guiding typically underserved Ohioans- first generation college-going, low-income, and minority – in getting the information and knowledge they need and deserve to prepare for, access and complete a postsecondary credential.  The College and Career Guides deliver programs and counseling on college and career exploration and financial education to 6th through 12th graders; provide support to 11th and 12th graders on strategic and tactile postsecondary access and financial planning; and facilitate successful postsecondary transitions, persistence and ongoing financial education with high school graduates.  Develop advising, mentoring, interpersonal, and leadership skills. This position is a full-time commitment of 1700 service hours to be completed in 11 months, starting in August 2024.  Opportunities for a half-time commitment of 900 service hours to be completed in 6 months may be available. College and Career Guides will receive a modest living allowance up to $30,000 or $1363.64 per pay before taxes, and an education award up to $7,395 upon completion of service. Additionally, College and Career Guides are eligible for health care insurance and childcare, and existing qualified student loans are deferred during time of service and accrued interest may be eligible to be paid by the Corporation of National and Community Service. The AmeriCorps Ohio College and Career Guides receive ongoing skills training, and professional development opportunities. Applicants must have earned an Associates degree (required) or Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or higher, or be a college senior. 

 

Serving at I Know I Can in Columbus, Ohio, AmeriCorps members will:

  • Assist students in making a post-secondary education plan.
  • Provide college and career information to students and families.
  • Help to facilitate information sessions and programs for students and parents.
  • Present classroom workshops to students.
  • Assist students with their college applications.
  • Plan and chaperone college visits.
  • Assist students with registration and waivers for SAT and ACT tests.
  • Assist students and families with the financial aid process and FAFSA submissions.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating visits to industry sector partners and college campuses.
  • Implement I Know I Can's curriculum/workshops, resulting in a change in behavior from students (i.e., students will increase their belief in a postsecondary education as measured by a pre/post assessment).
  • Help students research, identify, and apply for scholarships.
  • Enter data daily for each student/parent interaction into designated database.
  • Utilize data in Power BI and host site reports to monitor student services and participation.
  • Utilize organization and district planning tools that serve students (Outlook, Canva, MS Office, Infinite Campus, SchooLinks, TransfrVR) daily to assist with staying on task.
  • Acclimate students to postsecondary planning by setting goals, administering career and personality assessments, and assisting students with determining possible career pathways.
  • Assist school staff and I Know I Can staff with parent information nights, community events, and by representing I Know I Can at various events.
  • Participate in ALL service projects, while leading at least one project with 1 or 2 other members.
