Who We Are

Springfield Promise Neighborhood (SPN) is a placed-based and asset-based poverty alleviation project based in Springfield, Ohio.

The premise of Springfield Promise Neighborhood’s work is that the long-term goal of poverty alleviation depends upon the academic and social success of children, along with supportive families, excellent schools, and thriving neighborhoods.

SPN builds upon and enhances this theory of change — that a Thriving Neighborhood and a Thriving School drive Youth Success — and we believe this is the key to breaking the claim of generational poverty on the lives of children and the vitality of their families and neighborhoods.

Our Goals:

Develop extended learning programming that provides academic, cultural, social, and career experiences for children who otherwise struggle to access these resources.

Build community partnerships for new opportunities, to increase collaboration and communication among local organizations with similar goals.

Increase parent support, events, and activities to support the academic and social success of their children.

Build the Visioning Garden to be a community gathering space with a variety of events and opportunities for nutrition, physical activity, placemaking, and appreciation for the natural world.

What We Do

With youth organizations and local schools, SPN pilots extended learning programs for academics and enrichment, including youth volunteer opportunities to develop a service mindset, college and career exploration, and social opportunities to help our students be smart and kind.

In association with government and civic organizations, SPN facilitates place-based and asset-based community development initiatives and encourages grassroots resident involvement. Our social entrepreneurial efforts include original place-based research, developing innovative curricular and instructional programs, and helping local partners organize collective approaches to poverty alleviation.
